A Homemade Film

We live in a time that has been called "the end of forgetting." Unlike now, when it is almost impossible not to leave a prolific digital footprint, my parents had no means of leaving informative artifacts in the wake of the family's former existence as Volhynian Jews, and after as refugees for nearly ten years. In late adulthood, my desire to close this information gap became an obsession. I believed that being in some of the places they had been was crucial to an appreciation and understanding of my own identity. But just setting foot in these places was not enough. I also wanted to convey as clearly as I could to my children and to my grandchildren an essential part of the their rich heritage. For my sake as much as for theirs.
